Analysis

Taiwan is a middle power in Asia.

Taiwan lost one point in its overall score over the past year.

It performs best in its economic capability measure, where it places eighth. By contrast, Taiwan’s weakest measure is diplomatic influence, where it places 22nd, a result of its lack of official ties with other Asia Power Index countries. However, Taiwan maintains a substantial network of unofficial representative offices abroad, with its foreign policy bureaucracy ranked sixth in the region for its efficacy.

Taiwan’s resilience dropped by three places to 18th, with the country affected more than any other by trends weakening regional geoeconomic security.

Taiwan exerts less influence in the region than expected given its available resources, as indicated by the country’s negative power gap score, presenting its position as a diplomatic outsider. Its negative power gap score continued to deteriorate in 2022.

  • Taiwan is included in the Index as a self-governing territory claimed by China.
