China is a superpower in Asia.
China's score rose by 1 point in 2025, the second-largest increase in the region.
China places first for two measures — economic relationships and diplomatic influence. China’s score for economic relationships declined by 2.5 points as a result of relative losses in inward investment. Its score for diplomatic influence grew by 4.3 points to 97.7, the highest ever score for diplomatic influence for any country.
China’s weakest performance is in defence networks, where it ranks eighth, with a declining score in 2025. However, China’s military capability has continued to increase, reducing the gap between it and the United States to around 18 points, down from 27.5 in 2018.
China exerts slightly more influence in the region than expected given its available resources, as indicated by the country’s positive Power Gap score, which grew slightly in 2025.
